Treasure Our Past, Transform Our Future - Convocation Kicks Off School Year
August 16, 2019
San Angelo ISD held its annual back-to-school convocation on Thursday, August 15 at the Foster Communications Coliseum. The event welcomed all of the district's employees to the new school year and provided an atmosphere of celebration honoring each campus and department.
With a theme of "Treasure Our History, Transform Our Future", the audience was entertained by a skit and dance routine performed by SAISD staff inspired by movies such as Back to the Future and Avengers.
Attendees were also treated to performances of music selections by combined high school bands, orchestras, and choirs.
The keynote speaker for this year's event was author George Couros. Couros is a leading educator in the area of innovative leadership, teaching, and learning. He is the author of the book "The Innovator's Mindset; Empower Learning, Unleash Talent, and Lead a Culture of Creativity."
Throughout his message, Couros shared powerful examples of what innovative student learning should look like in education today. He encouraged the educators in attendance to empower their learners to wonder, to explore, and to become forward-thinking leaders. Through the use of humorous and often emotional stories and video clips, Couros reinforced the idea that meaningful change happens when you first connect to people's hearts.
Other highlights of the morning included presentation of colors by combined Central High School and Lake View High School JROTC Color Guards, pledges of allegiance led by SAISD students, and recognition of military guests from Goodfellow Air Force base.
