24 Game Challenges Students

November 17, 2017

On Thursday, November 16, SAISD 4th and 5th graders gathered at the Tom Green County Library to compete in the 24 Challenge.

The 24 Challenge is a tournament-style competition based on the 24® Game. During the competition, students raced to solve a series of mathematical puzzles by being the first to combine four numbers on a card to make 24 using only addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. The first person to correctly solve each puzzle, wins that card and the associated points. Each card is assigned a point value of 1 to 3 based on its difficulty.

Students competed against their own grade level in a 4 round elimation style tournament. Students competed at tables of up to 4 students, solving puzzles for a predetermined length of time. When each round was over, points were tallied and the players with the most points from each group moved to the next round. During the 4th and final round, the top 4 students competed against each other to determine the final ranking.

The top winner received a trophy, while the three runners-up received medals. All finalists received a movie theater gift card and a prize from a prize table.

Students who were eliminated in earlier rounds also continued to compete against each other and 5 consolation winners were determined from each grade level as well. All consolation winners also got to choose a prize from the prize table.

The annual competition, which is in its 26th year, is sponsored by the San Angelo Chapter of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants. This year marked the first time that the competition was opened up to all schools in Tom Green County. SAISD students took the four top spots in both grade levels.
