Board Approves Fieldhouse Project

December 17, 2008

During the December school board meeting, the board unanimously approved a bid for the construction of a new fieldhouse. The board's decision authorizes the district to accept a guaranteed-maximum bid of $5,961,595 by Templeton Construction for the fieldhouse project.

The project includes demolition of the current fieldhouse located next to San Angelo Stadium on Knickerbocker Rd. and construction of a new 29,000 square-foot facility. In addition to changing rooms and shower facilities, the fieldhouse also houses training, weight, and turf rooms. The facility is used daily by SAISD sports teams.

Construction of the fieldhouse was not a part of the recently approved bond election. The project will be funded through private donations and the district's existing fund balance and will not require a tax increase or another bond election.

Groundbreaking is scheduled for January and construction will begin immediately after. The current fieldhouse is scheduled for demolition in June. The south portion of the new fieldhouse should be completed prior to the start of football season next August and the entire project is scheduled for completion by August 2010.
