Lake View Sophomore to Study at Prestigious University

April 9, 2018

Lake View High School sophomore Belen Hernandez, a member of the school's Mariachi Program, has been awarded the opportunity to study this summer at one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the country.

Earlier this year, Belen submitted an application for a Putney Open Door Fund scholarship. The Putney Open Door Fund is a non-profit foundation whose purpose is to provide financial support for young people seeking educational summer experiences they could not otherwise afford. Belen's application included an essay about why she should be chosen for the opportunity.

Last month, Belen learned that she had been selected to receive a scholarship to attend the summer session at Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Belen was shocked when she received the phone call. "Honestly, I'm just speechless," she said.  "Many people applied, but not that many people get in. So I was thinking 'What are the chances?'"

Tuition for the Amherst summer session is $5,590 and the scholarship Belen received will cover the full amount.

Amherst University was founded in 1821 and is regarded as one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the nation. During her three week summer session, Belen will join an international community of high school students. She will take part in engaging discussions and hands-on projects that will allow her to explore new interests or dig deeper into her existing passions.

Belen, who has never travelled outside the state of Texas, is excited about the opportunities that this trip will present to her. "I really want to learn something new other than music." Specifically, Belen said that she is interested in the Entrepeneurship class that will be offered. "I want to start my own mariachi group," she said.

Congratulations Belen on this amazing opportunity.
