San Angelo ISD held its annual back-to-school convocation on Tuesday, August 15 at the Foster Communications Coliseum. The event welcomed all of the district's employees to the new school year and provided an atmosphere of celebration honoring each campus and department.
The keynote speaker for this year's event was inspirational speaker John O’Leary. O’Leary, who suffered third-degree burns on 100 percent of his body at the age of nine, shared his inspiring story of overcoming impossible odds.
O'Leary told of the countless people whose actions made a difference in his life during his journey to recovery. He asked those in attendance to share with those around them one person who inspired them to become the best version of themselves. In doing so, O'Leary also encouraged the educators in the room to "be the difference" in the lives of others.
O'Leary concluded by asking attendees to make a commitment to do one thing to ensure tomorrow is better than today. Watch O'Leary's keynote speech below.
Other highlights of the morning included a combined Central High School and Lake View High School JROTC Color Guard as well as performances of patriotic music selections by combined high school bands and choirs.
