SAISD Responds to Concern Over Netflix Series 13 Reasons Why

May 1, 2017

San Angelo ISD administrators are aware of the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, which debuted on March 31 and is gaining national momentum. There are many social issues depicted in the series, including the main character’s death by suicide.

The show has generated a great deal of discussion about the impact the series may have on our youth.  SAISD has ongoing campus crisis protocol procedures in place at all campuses as well as full time counselors at each campus. Additionally, the district is fortunate to partner with many community agencies who provide outstanding resources for students and families.

During these last few weeks of the school year, SAISD has established additional proactive measures with regard to the needs of our students.

If your child is watching the series, take time to have conversations about the content and possibly watch the series together. You may also review these talking points created specifically for the series by mental health experts.

Should parents or students feel the need for support with regard to social issues depicted in this particular series or for other possible concerns, the district requests that they reach out to campus counselors and administrators who will be available to meet with them.
