Central Swimming Brings Home First State Medal in 30 Years

February 23, 2017

Central High School Senior Matt Brewer ended a 30-year drought at the state swim meet held at the University of Texas in Austin February 17-18.  Brewer captured 3rd place in the Boys 50-yard Free with a school record-breaking time of 20.6 seconds.  Prior to Brewer’s recent success, the last time a Central swimmer medaled at state was in 1985, when Travis Meyers won gold twice at the state meet.

In addition to Brewer’s medal, two relay teams also broke school records at the state meet. The team of Riley Hill, Ryan Brown, Nate Pierro, and Matt Brewer beat the Boys 200 Freestyle Relay record with a time of 1:25.1. And the team of Ryan Brown, Riley Hill, Alex Tucei, and Matt Brewer beat the Boys 400 Freestyle Relay record with a time of 3:08.9.

In all, seven school records were broken during the season.

CHS Swim Coach David Hague, who was named Coach of the Meet during this year’s regional competition, has led both the boys and girls swim teams to seven consecutive district titles.  In August, he will begin his 40th year as the Bobcats’ coach.
